5 Things You Should Never Do to a Failed Drive

Well-meaning attempts to fix a failed drive can make data recovery impossible. Avoid these mistakes.

When a hard drive fails, panic sets in. But before you try to fix it yourself, read this. These common "fixes" often destroy any chance of professional recovery.

1. Don't Keep Trying to Restart It

Every time you power on a failing drive, you risk further damage. If you hear clicking or grinding sounds, stop immediately. Each attempt wears down components and can turn a recoverable situation into a permanent loss.

2. Don't Open the Drive Yourself

Hard drives require a clean room environment. Opening a drive in a normal room exposes the platters to dust and particles that will cause permanent damage. Even a single fingerprint can ruin your data forever.

3. Don't Use Data Recovery Software on Physically Failed Drives

If your drive is making unusual noises or won't spin up, software can't help. Running recovery software on a physically damaged drive will make things worse, potentially overwriting recoverable data or causing additional mechanical damage.

4. Don't Freeze the Drive

This old myth still circulates online. Freezing a hard drive can cause condensation inside, which destroys the platters. While it might occasionally work as a last resort with very old drives, it almost always makes professional recovery impossible.

5. Don't Swap Circuit Boards Without Expertise

Modern hard drives store unique calibration data on the circuit board. Simply swapping boards from an identical drive model won't work and can cause electrical damage to the platters. Board swaps require specialized equipment to transfer this calibration data.

What You SHOULD Do

  • Stop using the drive immediately
  • Power it down and disconnect it
  • Document what happened (sounds, error messages, etc.)
  • Contact a professional data recovery service
  • Don't delay – the longer you wait, the more risk

We've seen countless drives arrive in worse condition because someone tried a DIY fix first. Professional recovery is always more affordable than attempting repairs yourself and failing. Protect your data—call the experts first.
